YouTube for Android Lets You Watch Videos Offline

Google-related items sailed by almost unnoticed — such as a cool update to the Android version of YouTube.

For the first time, YouTube will start downloading videos it thinks you might want to watch, whenever you’re plugged in and on Wi-fi.

That’s great news for commuters, for example, who can now watch videos when outside their mobile coverage zone (or without paying for costly video downloads over 3G).

YouTube will start choosing and downloading those videos based on your past browsing habits, as well as what channels you’re subscribed to. (YouTube had a channel-based design relaunch back in December, which it says has boosted the number of ch…

Facebook Will Disappear by 2020, Says Analyst

Facebook's sliding stock price has at least one hedge fund manager predicting a dismal decade ahead for the social network.

"In five to eight years they are going to disappear in the way that Yahoo has disappeared," Ironfire Capital founder Eric Jackson told the CNBC show Squawk on the Street on Monday.

[More from Mashable: Beautiful Visualizations Show Global Facebook Activity]

"Yahoo is still making money, it's still profitable, still has 13,000 employees working for it, but it's 10% of the value that it was at the height of 2000," Jackson added. "For all intents and purposes, it's disappeared."

So how exactly does Jackson see Facebook's power eroding by decade's end? He says it will be the continued emergence of the mobile web -- and Facebook's struggle to adapt to that paradigm shift.

[More from Mashable: Facebook to Receive GLAAD Award for LGBT Efforts]

"The world is moving faster, it's getting more competitive, not less," he said. "I think those who are dominant in their prior generation are really going to have a hard time moving into this newer generation.

"Facebook can buy a bunch of mobile companies, but they are still a big, fat website and that's different from a mobile app."

Facebook bought the wildly popular mobile photo-sharing app Instagram -- which some saw as a potential rival -- for $1 billion in April. Still, the company has acknowledged mobile as a potential stumbling block for sustained growth.

In its required initial pre-IPO disclosure of 35 "risk factors" released in February, the company admitted that as mobile use of Facebook and the web in general continues to expand, its ad-free mobile platform will become more problematic. In an amended filing in May, the company underscored that challenge again.

Facebook stock officially went on sale on May 18 at $38 per share. It closed Monday at $26.90.

Jackson sees Facebook as a member of the second of three generations of modern Internet companies. The first generation, highlighted by businesses such as Google and Yahoo, served as portals that organized and aggregated the web's wealth of information. The second generation, most notably Facebook, capitalized on an emerging social web.

The third generation is made up of companies whose sole goal is leveraging and monetizing mobile users.

"When you look over these three generations, no matter how successful you are in one generation, you don't seem to be able to translate that into success in the second generation, no matter how much money you have in the bank, no matter how many smart PhDs you have working for you," Jackson says.

"Look at how Google has struggled moving into social, and I think Facebook is going to have the same kind of challenges moving into mobile."

What do you think Facebook's status will be in five years? Share your predictions in the comments.

Google Nexus 7: First Jelly Bean Tablet is Light and Fast

Google took the wraps off the first device to run Android 4.1, Jelly Bean: a 7-inch tablet made by Asus, called the Nexus 7.

The pint—sized tablet has a 1280 x 800 display, NVIDIA quad-core Tegra 4 processor, and Google claims the tablet will keep kicking for 10 hours of reading or 8 hours of HD video playback on a single charge.

We had a brief opportunity after the keynote to spend a little bit of time with one of the tablets, albeit tied down to a demo station.

The tablet is light. Weighing in at just 340 grams you’re probably not going to notice any extra weight when you throw it in your book bag or purse. The back-lit IPS display is easy to see from a variety of angles, and while some connectivity issues prevented us from doing things on the web what we were able to do on the tablet without an internet connection -– or with a spotty one at times — zipped along.

An 8GB version of the tablet is going to run you $199, putting it right on par price-wise with Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet and Amazon’s Kindle Fire. It also comes with a $25 credit to the Google Play store to help you get started filling it with apps, and essentially bringing that ultimate device price tag down a bit.

Besides some pretty impressive stuff under the hood, one thing that’s going to stand out with the Nexus 7 is that it is running a pure version of Android. Both the Nook and Fire are running Android, but these are stripped-down custom version of the OS. That means you have limited access to apps in the Google Play store, for example.

The Nexus 7 gives you access to all the apps you’re going to want, and fully integrates with Google services like Gmail and Google +. If you’re rocking an Android phone, then information will sync between your tablet and phone, and all that will also sync with what you do on your computer.

If you need more internal storage than 8GB, Google is also offering a 16GB version of the tablet for $249. Both are available now for pre-order from the Google Play store, and are expected to ship in the next 2-3 weeks.

Check out the gallery below for an up close look at the nexus 7 in action, and be sure to check back for a full review of the device once we’ve been able to spend a little more time with it.

ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 review

When ASUS first teased the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 back at CES, many customers looked on, simmering with rage. You see, only several weeks earlier the company started selling the Transformer Prime, a top-tier tablet priced at a not-so-cheap $500. It was a state-of-the-art product...until ASUS unveiled the TF700, a tablet that was similar, only better. It, too, has a Tegra 3 chip and 8-megapixel camera, but it adds a higher-res, 1920 x 1200 display and promises improved signal reception, a pain point for the Prime.

Little did those disgruntled Prime owners know it would actually be a long time before the TF700 ever became available. Now, we're finally hearing it will go on sale in the US in mid-July, at which point the Prime is expected to drop in price before it gets discontinued. But is the TF700 all that much of an improvement over the original? And how does it stack up against comparably priced tablets, such as the new iPad, Acer Iconia Tab A700 and Toshiba Excite 10? Check out our early review to find out.

SpaceX Chalks Up Giant Leap for Commercial Space Travel

The Dragon was caught by its tail on Friday. The unmanned SpaceX spacecraft, which launched into orbit earlier this week, has successfully docked with the International Space Station, marking a first for a cargo-carrying private spacecraft.

The docking was assisted with the station’s 58-foot robotic arm controlled by astronaut Don Pettit. The historic linkup occurred 250 miles above northwest Australia.

This is a very big deal for space exploration, said futurist Glen Hiernsta of the arrival of the Dragon capsule to the ISS. This is the first private company to embark on such a mission.

They’ve succeeded with several launches, Hiernstra told Techogles, The next ‘big hold your breath moment’ isn’t just one moment either. It is whether they can do this over and over, and they are proving they can.

GameFly looking to launch Android app store, publish mobile games

Get ready for another entry into the crowded mobile game market, this time from a somewhat unlikely source. GameFly, the U.S. rental outfit, wants to sell you Android games.

Those familiar with the world of video games will know about GameFly. When Netflix was rising to prominence with its DVD-mailing service, GameFly was a U.S. company that offered something similar, only with video games. It continues to offer a subscription rental service in which games are mailed to customers, played, and sent back, but according to a story from Pocket Gamer, the firm has just announced plans to start its own app store for Google’s Android operating system and means to publish mobile games for both Android and Apple’s iOS platform.

Future of PureView tech: Slimmer models and next-gen camera sensor “not necessarily 41 MP”

Nokia’s 808 PureView may not even be blasting retinas in stores just yet, but that doesn’t mean those Finnish cameraphone obsessives aren’t already cooking up a buffet of high-megapixel ideas for the future. Vesa Jutila, Head of Product Marketing for the incoming 808 PureView, said that there was plenty more high-spec digital imaging products in the pipeline. While he wasn’t about to be drawn on specifics for any future Lumina PureView unions just yet, there were “multiple ways” that Nokia could run with its new imaging jewel. Slimmer models are a possibility, still containing high-end Zeiss optics and Nokia’s oversampling techniques avoiding the need for optical zoom. He added that the next generation of Nokia camera sensors are already being worked on — the 808 PureView was borne from an idea back in 2007. Jutila included one more soupçon of information: future PureView products “would not necessarily have the same 41-megapixel sensor” that we’ve been playing with recently.

Facebook Launches App Center, Where You Can Sell Apps

Facebook just got a little bit more like Apple and Google.

The company announced on Wednesday that it is building its own app center. It will also enable paid Facebook apps for the first time.

Users currently search for apps on Facebook using the same search bar they use to find people, groups and events. In the coming weeks, they’ll be able to search from a dashboard that looks much like Apple’s App Store or Google Play — complete with details and ratings for each app.

Facebook will build access to the center into its web product, as well as its iOS and Android apps.

Though the new app hub looks similar to its Apple and Google counterparts, it will work very differently. Since many “Facebook apps” are actually iOS or Android apps with Facebook integrations, it will refer users to other app stores to download them.

“The App Center is designed to grow mobile apps that use Facebook – whether they’re on iOS, Android or the mobile web,” explained Facebook engineer Aaron Brady in a blog post.

To reach Facebook’s more than 900 million users through its app store, developers need to use Facebook Login in their apps. That’s a pretty big incentive to use Facebook Login.

Facebook also introduced paid apps on Facebook.com Wednesday. Facebook apps such as Zynga games have been free up until this point. In Zynga’s case, this hasn’t stopped it from raking in revenue from in-app purchases and advertisers.

But paid apps will offer a new opportunity for Facebook developers to monetize — and for Facebook to collect a 30% cut of their transactions.

Facebook Pulls Camera App Out as Instagram Deal Pends

With some hoopla, the Facebook Camera app hit the iTunes App  Store on Thursday.

A fairly simple app, it syncs with a user’s Facebook account, offers a variety of Instagram-like photo editing tools, and allows for the upload of multiple photos at once. It also geotags photos and collects all of the photos uploaded by friends in one stream that’s viewable within the app.

The app’s editing tools allow for cropping and adding effects like “coffee,” “highlight,” “neon” and “bright.” Before or after they’ve been edited, the photos can instantly be posted, either one at a time or in groups, to Facebook.
